The Mukherjee Development – An indie, rock, and folk band that calls for both reflection and celebration in a fast-paced world.
“They’re the Danish Coldplay - only better than the original,” wrote GAFFA recently in a five-star live review of The Mukherjee Development. The name “Mukherjee” is Indian and belongs to the band’s Danish/American/Indian frontman, Oscar Mukherjee, whose Californian upbringing lends the band’s English lyrics a natural ease and fluency. The group also features seasoned musicians known from acts such as Jonah Blacksmith and Peter Sommer & Tiggerne, who, within The Mukherjee Development, unfold with musical mastery and creativity.
“Through our music and storytelling, we aim to counter polarization and instead encourage a sense of community - both among ourselves and with our audience. We want to create a space for creativity and presence in a time that’s moving just a bit too fast,” says Oscar Mukherjee.
And few bands can fill a room with presence and dynamics the way The Mukherjee Development can. When they take the stage, they deliver timeless guitar-driven noise rock in the spirit of Neil Young and The War On Drugs, handcrafted folk/pop songs reminiscent of Sheryl Crow and The Cardigans, and understated, fragile indie ballads akin to those of Phoebe Bridgers.
The Mukherjee Development released a new album in August 2025 - their third since debuting in 2022. Previously, Oscar Mukherjee was the primary songwriter, but on the upcoming record, the band has written most of the songs collectively. You can hear it. Here, grand Britpop melodies meet handmade indie/folk tunes and solid rock, whose variation and cohesion create a vibrant synergy.
The lyrics are marked by sharp-eyed surrealism, inviting listener interpretation and bringing poetic clarity to the album’s major themes: love, friendship, and the search for identity in a time characterized by uncertainty and geopolitical challenges beyond individual grasp. When the album’s more experimental tracks play, theme and music fuse into a higher unity.
The Mukherjee Development has performed live on Go’ Morgen Danmark on TV2, played over 150 concerts - including NorthSide, Tønder Festival, and SmukFest - and received airplay on DR P4, P5, and P6. In 2024, Oscar Mukherjee was nominated for a Carl Prize as “Composer of the Year” and has previously won a Danish Music Award.
